1. Final Countdown for students graduating this year – do you need Career support?
If you have yet to firm up career plans there are a number of ways we can help.

  • Sign up to our New Graduates Careers Group’ on Facebook to keep up-to-date with relevant activities, news and support throughout the Summer Term and into the vacation.
  • See our series of Final Countdown workshops in Weeks 8 & 9, such as ‘Kick start your career planning’, faculty specific job-search workshops and ‘Interview basics’. See all here and just turn up to as many as you wish!
  • Explore all resources available at www.york.ac.uk/careers and book to see a Careers Adviser, via the Interactive Careers Service, if you require one-to-one support.
  • On the Interactive Careers Service you will also find hundreds of graduate vacancies, some with summer starts.

It isn’t too late to make plans for after graduation. Take some time to tap into the resources and support available at Careers this term.

2. Paid internships available this summer – apply now!
The Student Internship Bureau is currently posting new summer opportunities every day. If you are looking for paid, structured, project based work experience this vacation, visit the Interactive Careers Service www.york.ac.uk/careers/ics and search by organisation Student Internship Bureau to find the vacancy listings. There are projects for students of all degree disciplines based in and around the City of York – with over 40 projects within the University itself.

3. Would you like to study in China for 3 weeks this summer?
The Study China Programme 2013 is run by the University of Manchester and is funded by the UK Government.  The programme gives you the chance to develop Chinese language skills and develop your knowledge of current economic climate, arts, history and culture in China.   All tuition and accommodation fees will be paid for you but you will fund your own travel.

Find out more about the programme and apply before 7 June 2013. Applications are processed on a rolling basis so early application is advised.

Where no location is given for an event, please log into the Interactive Careers Service for further information and booking details.  (Please note that York Award courses are open to students in all years whether or not they intend to apply for the York Award in final year.)

5. It’s NOT too late to get a graduate job this year – check out the summer recruitment fairs for lots of employers recruiting now!
There are lots of recruitment fairs happening in the summer – so don’t miss this chance to meet employers with graduate jobs and internships.  Check out the fairs here. Nearest to York is the Yorkshire Graduate Recruitment Fair  on 5 June in Leeds. This fair is open to York students and it will feature a Local Employment Zone with up to 35 employers with vacancies in the region.

6.  Study space in Careers
If you’ve been struggling to find a quiet spot to study – look no further!  We’ve rearranged our information room to create more study space (for any study – not just careers-related) and which you are welcome to come in and use any time during opening hours (10.00am – 5.00pm term time). The Careers building is next to Central car park, near the Market Square shops.

7. Ever fancied working as part of an events team? Illuminating York and the Yorkshire Marathon need you!
Register your interest now to be part of one of York’s large scale events this autumn! York is holding its first marathon on Sunday 20 October and Illuminating York, the city’s annual digital arts and lighting festival is being held from Wednesday 30 October to Saturday 2 November, and these events need YOU to make it happen! The volunteering roles available include helping out with marketing, stewarding and helping audiences with festival information.

8. Returning home to China, Malaysia or India after your degree?
The Gradlink website contains useful information for international students returning to these countries at the end of their course. Find graduate vacancies, read profiles, meet employers and more.

We have also updated our webpages for international students with lots of useful information whether you are looking for part time or vacation work, want to stay in the UK to work or are returning home at the end of your course  – check them out.

9. COMING SOON – Autumn Careers Fairs
Dates for your diary: don’t miss out on the opportunities offered by the autumn term careers fairs:

  • Careers in Management and Finance, 15 October
  • Careers in Technology, 16 October
  • Careers in Law, 24 October.

Speaking to employers in your chosen sector is a great way to learn about the industry and get a feel for the different organisations and their graduate schemes.  Many of the companies attending the fairs will be offering graduate schemes and summer placements – so whether you’re looking for your first graduate job or an internship giving you valuable work experience, the fairs will have something for you.  Details of employers attending will be advertised at www.york.ac.uk/careers/events.
